Read about our Capital Campaign

The Common Place has been working with children and their families since we opened our doors in 2013. Buff Barnes, who still works with TCP and our partner Salt and Light Church, was asked to come and lead the children in mindfulness activities monthly during their time in the scholars program, by the founding Director, Rev. Aisha  Brooks-Johnson (then Brooks-Lytle). The Scholars Program was set up to be a place for kids to come after-school to receive mentorship, homework support, and space to explore other subjects beyond what they are exposed to at school.

January 2024 opened with a renewed sense of direction for the scholars. Staff were well rested as they began their work with the scholars, getting them back on track with routines and schedules.  Three Hardy Williams school interns started working with our scholars on Wednesday for the next 5 weeks.  They will assist the staff with daily tasks all while learning about working with people.  In addition, the scholars were able to spend some of their hard-earned “dough” from the Scholars for Dollars behavior incentive program on snacks, soda, and candy!  We are looking forward to the following activities throughout the rest of the school year:

Feb – Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day

March – Women’s History Month

April – Spring Break, 18th-Scholars Market, Earth Day

May – Mother’s Day, Memorial Da
