Green Our Planet: Hydroponics

At The Common Place, we are pioneering modern, sustainable agriculture with our Hydroponics Garden Room, developed in partnership with Green Our Planet. This innovative system allows us to grow fresh produce indoors year-round, using water-efficient methods that require no soil and minimal space. By utilizing hydroponics, we can cultivate nutrient-rich plants in a controlled environment. This makes healthy, fresh food more accessible to our community, even in urban settings.

The Hydroponics Garden Room serves as both a food production space and an educational resource. It allows children in Southwest Philadelphia to learn about sustainable agriculture and cutting-edge farming techniques through hands-on experience. As part of our commitment to food sovereignty, this system supports our weekly food distribution program by consistently providing fresh produce.

Our hydroponic system also contributes to our vision of a garden network, working in harmony with our outdoor gardens to fight food insecurity and promote healthier eating habits across our community. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire a new generation of urban farmers while reinforcing the importance of sustainable, local food production.

About Green Our Planet

Green Our Planet was founded by filmmakers and entrepreneurs Ciara Byrne and Kim McQuarrie. They believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn science outside in a school garden and/or in a hydroponics laboratory, to have the opportunity to learn how to eat and live a healthy life and to be able to connect with the planet and nature in a meaningful way. Alongside their team they are on a mission to increase joy and equity in communities across America and around the world by empowering people to grow food and connecting them to the magic and majesty of the Universe.
