A Night of Community and Connection: Celebrating TCP’s Inaugural Homecoming

On October 18th, The Common Place (TCP) hosted its inaugural Homecoming event—an inspiring evening filled with community, generosity, and connection. Guests enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere with wine, snacks, and live music from the talented V. Shayne Frederick, whose soulful performance set the perfect tone for the night.

Throughout the evening, attendees toured the TCP space, getting a firsthand glimpse of how the building serves and uplifts the local community. In addition to hosting an afterschool program and a food justice ministry, TCP offers spiritual direction, mental health services, tutoring, and even a GED program.

The evening began with an opening devotion from Spiritual Director Buff Barnes, who shared heartfelt reflections from her time as a volunteer. Board Chair Rev. Leonard Dow followed, speaking passionately about the profound impact TCP has on Southwest Philadelphia. He described TCP as a “plaza” for the neighborhood—a welcoming place open to all.

Director of Donor Relations Ashley Rossi emphasized the critical need for ongoing funding, explaining that all proceeds from the Homecoming event would go toward scholarships for the Afterschool Scholars program, ensuring educational opportunities for children in the community. TCP Executive Director Rev. Christopher Holland then outlined the organization’s vision for the future, sharing plans to deepen its focus on education and food sovereignty. He stressed the importance of expanding partnerships and volunteer efforts to create a more united Southwest Philadelphia. “This is more than just a building,” he said, “this is a movement, and the future is very bright.”
