Weekly Community Food Distribution

Launched in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to the violent unrest that further heightened the critical need for food in Southwest Philadelphia, our Weekly Community Food Distribution has grown to serve over 100 families each week. This vital program is operated in partnership with Salt & Light Community Church, and supported by Wayne Presbyterian Church, Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Zion Baptist Church Ambler, and other local organizations.

Every Saturday morning from 10 AM to Noon, rain or shine, at the corner of 58th & Chester, we provide fresh produce, pantry staples, and essential food items. When available, we also distribute toiletries and clothing to those in need. Some of the fresh produce comes from our own gardens, including Bunny’s Garden @ The Common Place, Bunny’s Garden II @ SWPC, and our Hydroponics Garden Room, forming a sustainable local food network. The program also sources food from several CSAs, such as Caring for Friends, Share Food Philly, Philabundance, and generous individual donors.

The distribution is run by dedicated community volunteers, many of whom are connected to Salt & Light Community Church, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and service that underpins our efforts. This program not only addresses immediate food insecurity but also fosters a strong sense of community and support among neighbors.

As part of our broader Food Sovereignty initiatives, our weekly food distribution is a critical resource in building a healthier and more resilient Southwest Philadelphia.
